In a world filled with noise, how do you get people to actually read what you write?

I believe you definitely want your posts read by many people, right?

Well, in order to make the readers want to read your article, you need more than just great content. Determining factor that will make your content will be read is a great headline!

Great headlines can make great difference whether your post is read or not by your readers. It was the first thing that will give the biggest impression and attract the attention of your readers.

How to Write Great Headlines

In order to write a great headline, you can ask yourself the following questions. You can also use these questions as a checklist for writing eye catching headlines:

  • Is your headline offers something useful? || If people who see your headline will learn something valuable from it, or get something useful out of it, most likely they will read your article.
  • Is your headline informative? || Your headline have to provide enough information about the core of the article. That’s why they want to read your article. Yes, they expect something when they read your headlines.
  • Do you have an unique headline? || Because many sites that offer similar information, you must have an added value in your headline, so that you are able to stand out in the crowd.

If you try to ask these questions before making your headlines, surely, you can give added value to your readers by offering attractive headlines. The possibility your readers will read your article will be higher.

Headlines Writing Tips

Sometimes, many people don’t think too much about the headlines when writing articles. They only focus on the quality of the content, not on the headline. It was like they made the headlines as their stepson.

But, it’s wrong; the headline is your first son.

Logically:

The most important part of your website >> website content

The most important part of your content >> content headlines

It means:

The most important part of your entire website >> content headlines [Click To Tweet This!]

You should not underestimate your article headlines. If you have great content, if it’s not supported by a great headline, the possibility of your article to be read by your readers will be thin.

And otherwise, if you have junk content, but you make titles that attract a lot of people, they will read it for sure. Although in the end, they were disappointed with the content, but at least, they read it!

That’s the reason I write this post. I want to help you to write great headlines that would work well to attract readers and increase your readership at once. You can use these simple tips to formulate a great headline:

1. Try Using Numbers

Use Numbers

Using numbers as part of your content headlines is a great idea to attract many readers to stick in reading your article. One reason that makes a lot of bloggers use numbers in their headlines is because it works well!

For example, the headlines such as “7 Tips Using LinkedIn To Increase Your Blog Traffic” or “7 Quick Ways To Increase Alexa Rank of Your Website” are favored by readers.

Numbers give clear descriptions for your readers about what they would get from the articles. Indeed, it will save your time!

Actually, there are several reasons why numbers in headlines preferred by readers, and I think, you should know about it. 🙂

2. Try Using Unique Rationale

If you want to create a post in the list form, you should make an original and interesting headline. Sometimes, something unique could look so attractive though.

You can use these as your consideration in making a headline:

  • Tricks
  • Facts
  • Reasons
  • Ways
  • Tips
  • Ideas
  • etc..

If possible, never use “Things.” You can do better than that!

3. Try Using Interesting Adjectives

Interesting adjectives in the headline can attract readers to read your article for sure. You can use these adjectives:

  • Effortless
  • Awesome
  • Fun
  • Essential
  • Absolute
  • Incredible
  • etc…

If you can use proper adjectives in your headlines, it could be a magnet that attracts more readers. It has become human nature to favor such adjectives though.

4. Try Using Bold Promises

Make A Promise

People go online to search for something they need. They sort out information that they think would be useful for them. Don’t miss this chance; you should take advantage of this, promise something valuable for them!

Are you going to reveal something that has never been known by anyone else? Are you going to give the secrets that will increase your readers’s skills? Or, are you going to motivate others to do things that they have never been done before?

There is only one reason; you challenge your readers to read your article. Tease your readers; be seductive! Challenge your readers, be dangerous! Of course, it’s all still within reasonable limits.

Then, don’t forget to keep your promise by deliver what you promised.

5. Try Using When, How, Why, or What

These are the magic words in creating great headlines. These words can be used as trigger words to make your reader interested in reading your articles. You are free to choose which word you would use as part of your headlines.

Usually, in making a great headline, you’ll only use one of these options, number or trigger word. You can use both if you have a good ability in stringing words.

Formula for Writing Great Headlines

Here’s a simple formula for writing good headlines:

Number or Trigger word + Adjective + Keyword + Promise

[Click To Tweet This!]

For example: Let’s say the subject “bathing cats.” You could write an article with headline, “How to Survive Giving Your Cat a Bath” or “Why I Love Bathing Cats.

If you use the formula above, then you can make it like this: “12 Secrets You Can Bathe a Cat Easily

Another example: Using a bold promise like “selling your house in one hour.

Apply the formula and here what you get: “How To Sell Your House in One Hour or Less

People want to read something exciting and you have to provide that something exciting through your headlines. Make sure your headlines honestly describe the contents.

Now, you have to know some tips on writing good headlines. Besides the headline, other part that has big contribution whether you post will be read or not is the introduction. So, I recommend you to read my previous article about how to write great blog post introductions in advance.

That’s it! That’s all I can tell you about how to write great headlines. I hope this article useful for you.

Then, what tips for writing great headlines do you use?

    Hey Nanda,

Ah, the most important part of the post. The headline because without it grabbing people’s attention, no one will have the desire to read your content. Sad but true.

I’ll be honest with you, I use cheat sheets. Yep, I have collected probably five PDS’s and about four or five more posts with award winning headlines. We’re told to use them over and over again but put our own words in them and they definitely still work. I believe what they said was why reinvent the wheel. Use what already works.

I’m just never good with coming up with catchy titles so those cheat sheets have been my lifesaver. All of your ideas are great but this way is just much easier for me. LOL!!!

    Great share though, thanks.

      Hahaha ..
It’s a good idea. Indeed, if using great headlines that have had great results also will have a great effect. I like your idea. But if so, it looks like we have to compete with the original title owner in creating great content though. LOL! 😀

I guess I will use your idea in the future, as you said, “use what already works”

Thank you for being honest with me, Adrienne.
      I really appreciate it. 😉

    Hello Nanda!

Headline should magnetize the reader’s eyes. It takes more than good content or great design. The most important part of writing an article is the headline. I must say, creating your headline is an art.

All the tips you shared are all great. It is worth the read all in all, and very useful. Make a headline that’s direct, short, unique, don’t repeat the Lede (focus on the main point), and use active voice.

    Hello Nanda,

This is the first time to your site, and I am so glad I visited. Cool article and I really like your tips. Using numbers really does cause people to take notice and builds curiosity too.

I couldn’t agree more with your advice to not use “things” <— very general. lol

Headlines are the most important part of any page because the article itself will get no exposure at all if the headline isn’t clicked.

I think your formula for writing a good headline is a good baseline to get started.

Writing great headlines is something that is a layering process, in my opinion, and takes time to develop the skill.

Thanks for sharing your article – I enjoyed it. Will be sharing with my friends. Hope you have a great weekend. 🙂

Yes, I agree with you. Creating great headlines takes time. It also can depend on your writing skills and your reading as well. I think, it just takes practice. Well, practice makes perfect though 😉

Thanks for your nice words, Carol.

You have chosen the very right topic. Headlines should be eye catchy and should prove to be an impetus for the reader to read your blog post.

The tips you have provided are really valuable. One more thing I want to add is that sometimes you can use controversial headlines too. They have a natural power to attract a reader.

Sometimes we have to create a fear in the readers head. For example – You could have used a headline of this kind of this post of yours – ” You are Losing Traffic by not Implementing These 5 Headline Tips”
