Using StumbleUpon To Increase Your Blog Traffic

Do you know about StumbleUpon?

StumbleUpon is one of the famous social bookmarking sites that have a lot of users. It is driven by people who want to share with each other.

How it works is simple, users submit their content to StumbleUpon so-called “stumbling” the content. Then, other users will give thumbs up to express the content is pretty good or thumbs down to express the content is bad.

They can also add their opinions on that stumble though.

So, what are the advantages and disadvantages of StumbleUpon?

The Advantages of StumbleUpon:

I believe many seem to agree that StumbleUpon is easy to use. And, if you use the StumbleUpon toolbar, then you can submit your content with just a click of the mouse.

If your blog post is good, interesting and received a lot of stumbles, your blog traffic will also potentially increase drastically for sure.

StumbleUpon is also a place to build good relationships with other bloggers as well as find interesting ideas in creating good blog posts.

The Disadvantages of StumbleUpon:

As with other social bookmarking sites, you should not share your own content continuously, try to be more active share other people’s content than your own content. For this reason, the time that you should spend with StumbleUpon becomes longer.

Does StumbleUpon truly can increase my blog traffic?
Then, what the secrets of StumbleUpon success?

StumbleUpon truly indeed can increase your blog traffic, there is no doubt about it. StumbleUpon success means you can get a lot of traffic and your StumbleUpon reputation increased as well.

Use these 5 tips using StumbleUpon to increase your blog traffic for sure that can be found in this article. So, let’s get started…

1. Avoid Stumble Your Own Content Too Frequently

StumbleUponThere is an unwritten rule that you should follow on StumbleUpon. This rule applies not only to StumbleUpon, but also applies to any communities or groups.

The important rule is that you should not just stumble your own content!

Indeed, you may submit your own content, there is no prohibition on such action. However, you must remember that you are in a community and you should more contribute in it by sharing other people’s content that you think deserves to be shared.

If you simply stumble your own content, other users will assume that you are just doing self-promotion and not adding value to the community. And it’s not good, isn’t it?

2. Don’t Do Monotone Stumble

Besides you have to stumble other people’s content, make sure that you only share the content that has added value to other StumbleUpon users. You must try to stumble variety of content from various blogs.

3. Use Good Titles and Descriptions

Some time ago I had read an article about the power of headlines and description of an article. If you can use good titles and descriptions, then your article can attract a lot of readers just by looking at the title and description. It was great, wasn’t it?

So also on StumbleUpon, other users will not be interested in seeing your content if you are using vague titles and descriptions. Take a little of your time to create titles and descriptions that could attract the attention of other users. It was just a small act, but it works!

4. Make Friends

Make FriendsIf you want to increase your traffic with StumbleUpon, then you have to increase your StumbleUpon presence by networking with other users. Take a little time to get to know other users and make friends with them.

Then, you have to interact with them along with the growth of your network. You must realize that the true power of StumbleUpon is coming from your growing network.

5. Avoid Multiple Accounts

It would be better if you don’t create multiple accounts on StumbleUpon. One account and one identity is more than enough. Be honest, don’t try to fool StumbleUpon users by creating multiple accounts that you will use for your own benefits.

If you are caught having multiple accounts, this misfortune will cause your content will not be trusted by other users. It’s inevitable, you lied.

Your content will be buried along with your reputation. And worse, you get banned from StumbleUpon.

Instead of getting traffic, your StumbleUpon presence will progressively disappear. You must follow the rules, although these rules has never existed (unwritten rule).

That’s it! 5 tips using StumbleUpon to increase your blog traffic for sure. Follow these tips and feel the traffic boost that will occur in your blog.

  • Hi Nanda,

I don’t use Stumbleupon much. When I get there, I get lost in a sea of information and it does take away from what I’m focusing on. It takes great discipline for me to go on that platform!

I do think it is great, but use it very rarely. But thanks so much for explaining the do’s and dont’s because many folks just want to drop and run from there and it just doesn’t work that way.

    Hey Nanda,

I love StumbleUpon. It has brought me heaps of traffic. Some of my posts on Wassupblog have thousands of views and it’s all thanks to StumbleUpon.

Unfortunately I do submit a lot of my own content. I should get out of that habit. I’ll start by stumbling this post.

One thing I have noticed though is that although Stumblers are more likely to share a post they’re less likely to leave a comment. Which could be a good thing when posts get over a thousand views 😉

    • Hi Peter,

Glad to know you can get the benefits of StumbleUpon. That’s can be done by StumbleUpon I think. 😉

Yes, you should try to share other stuff, it will increase your StumbleUpon presence. Thanks for the share as well 🙂

Yes, indeed it’s often happens. Not all Stumblers want to comment on our blog. However, if they are indeed Stumbling our posts, I think it’s not a problem anymore. 😉

    Hey Nanda,

I also don’t use StumbleUpon any longer mainly because the traffic I was getting from that platform would land on my blog and quickly leave.

From my own personal experience I’ve come to learn that the people who visit social bookmarking sites are just scanning for information and not loyal visitors. That was just from my own personal experience although I’m sure that with the way things are changing and most platforms who are trying to improve the users experience that this could be changing. I sure hope so at least.

Thanks for sharing these tips with us though and I’m glad it’s working well for you. Yay!!!

Well, I don’t know about it. If so, I would also be more careful in using StumbleUpon then.

Yes, it looks like you are correct. I also feel the same experience. They want to find information and it’s not limited to any of the websites or blogs. Loyal readers could exist on how active we are in the world of blogging and presenting information useful to them. That’s my opinion though 🙂

      You are very welcome, Adrienne.

  • Hi Nanda, I completely agree with you. I am a big fan of StumbleUpon. That site sends me more traffic than anyone but Google. I can also get traffic from older posts when suddenly Stumblers start to find it again.

I’m a member of a Stumbler’s tribe on Pinterest and that has really helped to increase my SU traffic. You’re right about only self-promoting. The more you share others’ posts the more traffic you’ll get to your own.

In fact, i will be stumbling this post! (Have you thought about adding a StumbleUpon sharing button to your site, Nanda?)

I also am a big fan of StumbleUpon for inspiration for article ideas. I recently did an article on puzzle websites and did nearly all of my research through StumbleUpon. I stumbled through the Puzzle category and found the puzzle websites I liked best. The article should have been very quick to write, except I spent hours having fun playing the puzzles! 😉

Yes, be kind enough to share the posts of others is one way to increase your online presence. I also do that as well if it indeed an interesting post.

Well, this site has a StumbleUpon sharing button from the beginning, Carolyn. Are you can not find it?

You can see it at: Share Button >> More >> You can find StumbleUpon button there.

I don’t make it visible directly because this blog does not have enough space for it. I hope you understand Carolyn 🙂

I am happy to get comments from a great fan of StumbleUpon. Your comment is very freely and insightful. 😀

  • Hey Nanda,

I am using StumbleUpon more over the last few weeks. Unfortunately I am having kind of the same results as Adrienne.

I get some traffic but they sure do leave quickly!

For me it doesn’t take to long to submit your info. So for now I will keep doing it and if I get one new loyal reader with each post, I’m good with that for now.

It’s still to early to make a final decision but I’ll stick with it for now.

    Take care Nanda..

Recently had conducted an interview with Yogita Agarwal of and maybe she stumbleupon the post on her account no doubt it brought me hundreds of visitors like never before from stumbleupon but the visitors way fickle minded and increase my bounds rate. so I kinda have the same opinion as i Adrienne maam. 🙂

    • Hi Swadhin,

      Welcome to my blog 🙂

Well, it looks like visitors who come from StumbleUpon is easy come easy go, I guess 😀

Maybe I should do something about this. But I am curious, why the visitors can quickly go and it happens to almost everyone?

It’s a mystery, I think. If anyone knows anything about this, please share with us 😉

Nanda, Though I am quite late to comment on this but there is one thing in my mind which I want to share. By using StumbleUpon there is no doubt that one gets a lot of traffic but this traffic may be Direct as well. I don;t know the reason when I post something Why i am getting more direct traffic from it and less from StumbleUpon referral? Do you have an Idea of this issue?

    • Hi Aditya,

Well, there is no late comment here. I appreciate your comment 🙂

About your question, I think it’s great. Direct traffic coming to your blog because visitors ever visit your blog at least once. The fact you have a lot of direct traffic means your blog has regular visitors who had ever visited your blog several times before.

If you want to get more referral traffic from StumbleUpon, then you should try to be more active there. If you are active, many new visitors will visit your blog and you will experience an increase in referral traffic as well. 😀

I think, that’s from me. I hope that useful for you 🙂

Thanks for your nice questions. 🙂

Honestly, I do not know about Digg. But, Stumbleupon is one of the platforms to increase your traffic quickly. With a record you have to know how to use it effectively, of course.

One shortcoming of Stumbleupon is there are many people who complain that when they use Stumbleupon, their bounce rate increases. I also admits it.

That is why you must know how to use Stumbleupon well to get the maximum results. 😉
