Stop Using SEO Techniques

Do you use SEO techniques to improve your website performance?
Did you know that there are some SEO techniques that cannot be applied anymore?

Since Hummingbird comes, SEO techniques that had once been used will make your website penalized. SEO techniques that you think will work for you will make you down. It was frustrating, right?

Well, you don’t need to be frustrated anymore. If you know what works and what does not, then all will be fine. That’s why, I want to warn you about 5 SEO techniques that can hurt your website. You should stop using these techniques immediately.

Technique #1:  Spammy Guest Blogging

Stop Spammy Guest BloggingYou should stop using guest blogging to gain links in 2014. That’s what Matt Cutts said earlier this year. However, guest blogging is an important SEO strategy that is already exists for a long time. Whether Matt Cutts really want to eliminate guest blogging?

The answer is: Yes and No.

The fact is guest blogging still a good thing. It is not to be afraid. The one who should be afraid are the spammy SEO users who make guest blogging becomes a blackhat technique.

In the blogging world there are two types of guest blogging, the one is legitimate guest blogging and the other one is the spammy one. There are still many people doing guest blogging well and properly. I also suggest you do guest blogging, but of course, with caution.

Because guest blogging already got attention from Matt Cutts, then there are some changes that may occur to suppress spammy guest blogging. Perhaps, Perhaps, here are a few changes:

  • Guest post that doesn’t have relevance to the website’s theme will be wiped out by Google. As an example, home insurance link is placed on technology blogs, it will be crushed soon.
  • Penalties will be tightened on optimized anchors that contained in guest posts. Google will do that for sure.

And I suggest you stop doing this in guest blogging:

  • Excessive use optimized anchors in your guest post.
  • Using long tail keywords in your guest posts to get ranked.
  • Writing low quality and irrelevant content in your guest post.

As you know, guest blogging is still important SEO techniques to improve website performance. However, when Google Hummingbird comes, all you have to do is be careful in implementing the plan of your guest blogging.

Conclusion: Be cautious in using the guest blogging.

Technique #2:  Optimized Anchors

What is exactly an optimized anchor?

An optimized anchor is keywords or anchor texts that you want to get ranked. For example, a website wants to get ranked using keyword “top smartphone,” the anchor used was “top smartphone” which would lead to its smartphone website.

In the past, SEO users use optimized anchors to improve their websites ranking. However, the days when optimized anchors work well have been gone. Nowadays, using optimized anchors is like asking to be punished by Google.

Now, the question you will probably ask is:

What kind of anchors should I use?

Nice question! All you have to do is use safe anchors. Here are some safe anchors that I recommend for you:

  • Branded URL like this: If you want to know more tips and advice about Blogging and Internet Marketing, check ososimpletechnologies.

Links are still important SEO techniques. However, the SEO value is higher than just anchor text.

Conclusion: It’s time to stop using optimized anchors, use safe anchors.

Technique #3:  Concerned With Quantity Links rather than Quality

Quality Links

Do you really think that the more backlinks you get, then your site will be better?

Not anymore!

If you are just looking for a lot of backlinks, you can find that out there. There are many agencies that offer link building services to you. You will receive a lot of backlinks in just a few days or weeks.

But, if you receive links that has some of these things, then your site will collapse:

  • Connect with sites that have been penalized.
  • Connect with sites that have low DA (under DA 20).
  • Receiving a lot of links in a short time.

Link building is great SEO techniques and it’s still exist today. But, in order these techniques works well, the SEO value you receive from link building should come from sites that have high authority.

Conclusion: Link building is still alive and works well, but you should avoid links from low DA backlinks. There is a better way.

Technique #4: Keyword Stuffing Content

Stop Keyword StuffingFrom the first time SEO appeared in this world, keyword stuffing is one of the techniques that are not too good to be applied. There are many warnings and punishment given if doing keyword stuffing. However, the fact is, there are still many people who do that technique today.

Matt Cutts also illustrated in a video in 2011 (video below), how the effects of excessive keyword stuffing. If you add one or two keywords, then you will get the ranking. Continually adding keywords, you will not get anything, just little influence on the ranking. Continually adding keywords, get ready to lose rank!

Well, I think you already know that. Now, I will give some advices about keywords stuffing that might be useful for you rather than just hearing the old warnings. Here it is:

  • Long tail keywords have a higher risk getting punished. For example, if you use long tail keywords “Las Vegas hotel vacation cheap”, then do not bring it up too much in your content. Mention it in your content too much, get ready to be punished! However, it’s okay if you only use the keyword “Las Vegas” several times.
  • Do not just add more keywords, add more content. A good content is not because of frequent keywords appear, but because the quality content and its benefits for many readers. Add more pages by adding more content, with so, the more pages in your site will be indexed.
  • You should worry if you cannot make good content, do not worry about keyword density. You must remember this, your goal is to make the content readable by readers, not for search engines.
  • Always use related keywords. To avoid keyword stuffing while increasing your search results, then the related keywords is very important for you to apply.

Conclusion: Don’t do keyword stuffing. Publish more posts along with longer content.

Technique #5: Relying on Backlinks rather than Content

SEO Link BuildingSEO has four components which mutually supportive. If you only do one component, you are just wasting your time because it will not work. One of the four components is the link backs.

There are many misunderstandings that happen to assume that a link backs is everything. However, it is not as simple as that. You have to use all the SEO components in order to work well.

In addition to back links, you must pay attention to the signals from social media, content marketing and onsite optimization.

  • Hi Nanda,

You are absolutely right! After the recent animal updates, most of SEO has changed. In-fact, even if you don’t use any SEO, your posts do well.

I have written some posts without SEO and they have somehow come on the first few pages of Google, which shows that SEO works only sometimes, depending on what you write and the words you use.

What’s important is that you use keyword variations now and concentrate on natural link building and writing good content, which should be foremost on the mind, isn’t it? Not to mention that building relationship with fellow bloggers is another essential element. Yes, even a strong social media presence helps a great deal, which Google wants now.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

  • Hi Nanda,

You are so correct. I am so glad SEO is dead because I just hated to read those over stuffed blog posts using too much SEO. It made no sense at all.

Yes, we can sprinkle a bit of SEO here and there, but not too much. It does make for better reading.

As for guest posting, some people just overdo it! I like to have a guest here and there that is relevant to my niche. Especially if there is something of value I cannot give but someone else can to my readers. I like to have “trusted” people I do know on my guest posts.

Oh those darn back links are driving me crazy! Every time I get a new person coming to my blog, I have to research them before I can approve their comment.

It’s a little more work, but well worth it.

May I add that Google is also taking into consideration what we are doing on the social sites. It is important these days to be quite active there too.

Yes, indeed. The old SEO is dead and it was good.
Well, SEO was created to make an article into a better reading one. However, sometimes there are also some people who are wrong during applying it, so their blog post become very difficult to read and hard to understand. That’s why, the new SEO is better 🙂

It looks like you’re on the right path for guest posts, Donna.
Indeed, it is important to have a guest post the same niche with our blog. If not, it looks like spammy post, right?

I also do the same for the comments on my blog. I have to make sure that these people deserve to be approved. Since a lot of spam coming into my comments and they seem to manually post a comment. As you told me, It’s a little more work, but well worth it 😉

Yes, I agree. Signals from social media also come into consideration by Google. I read a lot about it.

Hey Nanda, to be honest what you wrote here is a lot more thought on SEO that I have even bothered to apply in the past on my own websites.

I normally always got page rank one within just a couple of months with no exception and I never did any of this.

My advice on SEO is beyond simple: if you’re not writing for humans, then you’re doing it wrong!

PS. I really liked that you gave this SEO article some deep thoughts by the way but I wouldn’t even bother “optimizing” my sites this way.

    Hi Nanda,

I love all those new rules. The only one that is a bit misunderstood is guest blogging.

As long as guest blogging is done for the right reasons with great content, it’s still a good thing, but most people who are reaching out to good blogs to guest post on don’t do it for the juice but more for the exposure of themselves, which is all positive.

Everything else you mentioned here, is a good riddance and I’m so glad it gone 🙂

  • SEO is an every changing ball park, and as bloggers we need to keep on top of things.

I like your mention of guest blogging here. A lot of bloggers have been scared off thinking that this is no longer acceptable, but that is not what Matt was saying. Guest blogging for spamming links and low quality posting is frowned upon, but can still be used as a way of gaining new readership to your blog and building connections. Guest blogging just has to be undertaken in a quality manner, like the rest of your blogging!

    • Hi Catherine,

Glad to see you here and welcome to my blog 🙂

Yes, you are correct. What was said by Matt have made a lot of bloggers feel afraid in doing guest blogging. However, Matt was not mean that. He just raised the value of guest blogging. Guest blogging should be back become quality techniques 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and share your thoughts with us, Catherine.
Hope you have a wonderful week ahead.

  • Hi Nanda,

True that, each tips you urged to stop following can lead to the doom of a blog! If a blogger goes through this list and finds himself following the methods you mentioned, his blogs is at risk of getting penalized. Like you urged, one must stop using these methods.

Spammy guest blogging is what brought guest blogging to Google’s radar. Earlier, guest blogging had no bad name associated with it. But thanks to spammy guest bloggers, even the legit ones have to suffer!

And regarding backlinks, gone are the days when quantity used to be what mattered. Now, one quality backlink is better than having 10 average quality backlinks!

Keyword stuffing is a big no no! One must not consciously stuff KWs here and there in the article. One must write for the sake of readers instead!

A good article! I enjoyed reading it. And thankfully, I’m not using these techniques! 🙂
